Students Day 3

Option 1: Stop at the May Natural History Museum of the Tropics, just ten minutes south of Colorado Springs on Highway 115. Take Exit 135 off of I-25 and go west toward the mountains about 2 miles to Highway 115. Travel south 5 miles and at the museum signs (and "Hercules the Giant Beetle") turn right 1 mile to the entrance. Nevada Avenue (Hwy 115) can also be taken south 8 miles to the entrance of the museum. Visitors will see over seven thousand of the world's most beautiful and unusual invertebrates, representing all the tropical areas of the world. The museum houses one of the world's finest collections of giant tropical insects and related creatures. In addition, a Museum of Space Exploration is located at the same site. Learn about man's early flights, the latest space probes and stations and see exhibits, models, movies, and space photos. There are over 10 miles of hiking trails for groups to explore in this area. Eagles and other wild life are frequently spotted while hiking. The museum is open May 1st to October 1st and reservations are recommended. There is ample parking for buses, and group rates are available. Allow 1 and 1/2 hours for this visit. Call 719-576-0450 for more information.

Back out on Highway 115, head south to Highway 50. Turn right and proceed to Cañon City. The Dinosaur Depot is located at 330 Royal Gorge Boulevard (4th & Highway 50). This educational center and museum has paleontologists on the premises working on fossils from the Garden Park area. Some of the highlights are as follows: viewable lab preparation of these world class dinosaur specimens; guides who will explain the 120-year history of dinosaur excavation in the area; unique gift shop; tours of the Garden Park Fossil Area, active since 1877; and educational tours and field trips for all grades and ages. Special summer hours are: June, July, August, 7 days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. September through May: Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 719-269-7150 for individual rates, group rates, and tours of the Garden Park Fossil Area. Next stop will be Buckskin Joe Frontier Town & Railway. This must-see, old west town offers a glimpse back in time to the fascinating frontier town of old Colorado. With a backdrop of majestic scenery, Buckskin Joe has been the movie set for many of Hollywood's great westerns, such as "True Grit", "Cat Ballou", "The Sacketts", "The Cowboys", and "The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox". See authentically dressed actors participate in realistic gunfights and explore 27 buildings from Colorado's pioneer past. Enjoy a tasty lunch and hospitality at the Gold Nugget Restaurant and the Silver Dollar Saloon, pan for gold, go horseback riding, visit the region's largest gift shop, and ride the scenic 30-minute railway. Frontier Town is open May-September, Memorial Day-Labor Day. Call 719-275-5149 for more information. The Scenic Railway is open March-December, Call 71-275-5485 for more information. Board the Royal Gorge Route Railroad Train at the Santa Fe Depot for a spectacular ride through the Royal Gorge Canyon. Disembark the train at the famous “Hanging Bridge”, then ascend to the rim of the Royal Gorge by the Incline Railway where you will explore all the wonders of the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. Visitors will then be transported to the “put-in” for your rafting expedition of a lifetime! Option 3: Due to time concerns, groups may also choose to ride the Royal Gorge Route Railroad or the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. If taking the train, arrive in Cañon City early and catch the 9:00 a.m., noon, or 3p.m. Royal Gorge Route Railroad trip from Cañon City (2 hours roundtrip or 1 hour if group disembarks below bridge and takes the Incline Railway to top of Bridge/Park. Coach drives 30 minutes and meets group at top of canyon). This spectacular, scenic train route along the bottom of the Royal Gorge Canyon has open-air cars as well as comfortable, climate-controlled coaches, and a small snack bar. (If time permits, the Theodore Roosevelt car provides a special VIP trip and in the evenings is the twilight dinner car.) If full 2 hours, 24-mile train ride is completed, coach then drives 30 minutes to the rim of the Royal Gorge Bridge/Park to enjoy all of the park amenities. Marvel at the vistas and stretch the legs as the group enjoys the carousel, Silver Rock Railway, Royal Gorge Trolley, the Plaza Theatre, Nature Center, Cliff Terrace Restaurant, and the Waterclock.
